WartaBulukumba.Com – Sunlight creeps in through the old windows, giving warmth to the usually quiet room. The Bonto Haru Village Hall in Rilau Ale District, Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi, was seen crowded with dozens of farmers on Thursday afternoon, December 14 2023. A young man with a beard was holding a microphone. His name is Sri Puswandi, Chairman of Dana Mitra Tani (DMT). Slowly, in front of dozens of palm sugar farmers, he explained about cooperatives for farmers, restoration and protection of the Balangtieng watershed ecosystem, as well as collective work for mutual prosperity, especially improving the economy of palm sugar farmers.

“Currently, we will carry out an environmentally friendly Brown Sugar Producing Community Development and Assistance Program through Cooperative Business Entities to support the restoration and protection of the Balangtieng watershed ecosystem,” explained Sri Puswandi after the socialization event.

The program covers 12 villages in Rilau Ale District. With the presence of the village government, community leaders, palm sugar farmers, women farmers, youth, and various elements that make up the diversity of the local community, this event is not only an ordinary ceremony or discussion, but also raises hopes for change. In general, the aim of this program is to build collective action for palm sugar producers in developing human resources, strengthening institutions, increasing economic business results and adapting action, climate change mitigation and environmental preservation in the Balangtieng watershed area. “In this program, there are 12 villages in three sub-districts that are the focus, each of which is part of the Balangtieng watershed. “This is a big step for the Rilau Ale, Kindang and Bulukumpa Districts in protecting the ecosystem that surrounds us,” added Sri Puswandi in an enthusiastic tone.

This program covers a number of villages in Rilau Ale District, namely Anrang Village, Pangalloang Village, Bonto Bangun Village, Bonto Haru Village, Karama Village, Swatani Village, Bajiminasa Village, and Bonto Matene Village. For Kindang District there are Tammaona Village and Orogading Village. Meanwhile, in Bulukumpa District there is Sapobonto Village. Supported by UNDP Not only DMT plays a role in bringing about change. A. Arfhan Syukri, ST, MT, Secretary of the Department of Trade, Industry, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises also provided color in this socialization activity as a resource person, bringing a broad and in-depth view of the ongoing process. “The big goal behind this program is to build collective action in developing human resources, strengthening institutions, and increasing economic business results,” explained A. Arfhan Syukri. However, behind that, according to him, there is a framework that has been developed jointly for climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as environmental preservation in the Balangtieng watershed area. The program launched by DMT is the result of a strong collaboration between GEF SGP, the Environmental Business Development Foundation, support from the UN agency, namely UNDP, and the Balang Institute as the organizing institution in an initiative that combines the great potential in Balangtieng.

Sri Puswandi emphasized that this was not an ordinary meeting or just socialization.

“This is a big step taken by the farming community in protecting, caring for and developing the potential of natural resources while advancing shared prosperity,” he stressed. ***

The sun was scorching, and the dust rose from the cobbled dirt road. A pick-up truck crawled slowly on the road to Saritani Village, Wonosari District, Boalemo Regency. More than half of the dry land area of Gorontalo Province in the northern peninsula of Sulawesi has the potential for maize commodity development.

Gorontalo is one of the national corn centres. Production continues to increase until it has doubled in recent years. Exports to the Philippines have also boosted people’s dreams of prosperity. Saritani is the remotest village in southwest Wonosari District, Boalemo Regency. The distance is about 30 kilometres from the sub-district office, and about half of the road is unpaved. This transmigrant village consists of several settlement units (SP). Saritani SP3 is inhabited by 55 families of local transmigrants from Gorontalo and 45 families who are transmigrants from several areas in Java. They all live in harmony side by side. They take advantage of the potential of corn as an agricultural commodity. The contours of the terrain are steep, making farming in this land not easy. Luckily the fresh wind usually blows away the scorching heat.

Mbok (a nickname used to call an older woman) Waikem, a 51-year-old woman from East Java, is a determined individual who seeks a better life by joining the transmigration program in Gorontalo. She and her family, a husband and two children, previously tried their luck by leaving their peaceful hometown in Ngawi, East Java, for Kalimantan. After four months at the new place, they decided to return to East Java due to the worst condition of living. After returning, they worked on their 40 × 40 m² piece of land in their hometown. “Actually, the results were pretty good,” said Mbok Waikem. There were few chances to thrive, but it was sufficient for them. However, another problem disrupted this family. After getting back to Ngawi, Rohmat fell into a deep depression. Mbok Waikem tried to help her son, but her son did not show improvement.

One day, Mbok Waikem’s husband, Muhyar, saw an announcement of a transmigration offer outside Java. One of the destinations was Gorontalo, Sulawesi. Mbok Waikem and Muhyar did not give up easily. They decided to, once again, join the transmigration program to Gorontalo. They hoped to strive for better opportunities and to heal their son, Rohmat. They believed that the similar demography between their current place to the Boalemo Regency would support their livelihood.

In Boalemo, each transmigrant family got a house with a yard and a hectare of land. The land is about 1-2 kilometres from the house. The one-hectare land that the family of Mbok Waikem got is sloping. Muhyar started working on the land immediately, planting corn. The Saritani transmigration settlement still needs to reach the ideal standard of living. They need to collect rainwater for any purpose, including drinking and cooking. A well is located far away, but the water is not suitable for consumption. This family received no social security for the first six months where they almost ran out of their savings. Initially the family received a ten-month support, but the social security support was discontinued.

Not wanting to sit idly in the uncertainty, Mbok Waikem and his family planted their yard with little spices and seasonal crops. Mbok Waikem also produced and sold koro beans tempeh to her neighbours. The sales were small, but Mbok Waikem seized all opportunities she could find. Every day, Mbok Waikem and Muhyar go to the fields with Rohmat. Usually, Rohmat will return home earlier to bring the fodder for goats taken nearby the cornfield. Mbok Waikem and the communities choose to plant hybrid corn because it is easy to sell as collateral or to intermediaries.

Due to its remote location, farmers need to travel far to the sub-district town to get agricultural supplies which are exceptionally expensive. Mbok Waikem could produce 4-5 tons of corn from a 1-hectare, where she sells IDR 2,000/ kg. During the harvest season, the middleman will come to Saritani and pick the harvest from farmers. Some farmers, especially those from Java, also do intercropping.

Some of Mbok Waikem’s corn at her cornfield that has been harvested and is ready to be sold.

UNDP, through its Small Grants Programme, funded by the Global Environment Facility, worked with the local communities to address the water shortage in the area. With support from Marsudi Lestantun Institute, Mbok Waikem and locals in the Saritani village worked together to create a clean water network distributed to residents. Through a program called Building a Sustainable Agricultural Model Sloping Land Buffer Zone Nantu wildlife reserve, from 2018-2020, the group has slowly changed the farming pattern to fit the region’s climate challenge.

Now that her son has recovered, thanks to the fellow residents of Saritani village and the Marsudi Lestantun Group, Mbok Waikem hopes that his son will find his soul mate in Saritani. After nearly 20 years of wandering about, this resilient lady wishes that she and her husband can return to Java someday or retire in Gorontalo.

Written by Harijanto Suwarno & Aditya Widya Putri
Photos credit by Edy Susanto
Edited for UNDP Indonesia website by Enggi Dewanti

Senior advisor on environmental and climate-related issues at the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and Advisor to Norway’s GEF Council Member, Lauren Celine Naville Gisnås, and Norwegian Ambassador Rut Kruger Giverin visited two SGP projects on the Nusa Penida Island of Bali on 24 May 2022. They visited the SukaDanta Organic Farm and the Bukit Keker Learning House in Nusa Penida, where local communities are working with SGP and partners to restore degraded landscapes.

At the Bukit Keker Learning House, local communities are partnering with SGP to establish organic gardens, promote composting, waste management, recycling, and use of biogas systems. The Learning Centre is powered by solar energy and is a space for raising awareness about environmental issues, building local capacity in agro-ecological practices, and sustaining traditional knowledge and culture. The SukaData Organic Farm built an integrated organic farming system which relies entirely on chemical and waste free production.

“We saw an integrated farming system that fully utilize its natural potential. Everything that is planted here uses organic fertilizers, relies on rainwater, and learning is captured and disseminated to other farmers. In the future, we are optimistic that a model like this one is replicated across various regions in Indonesia and beyond to support food needs and improve the well-being of local communities” Lauren said.

“In SukaDanta, we noticed first-hand a promising potential to develop a waste and chemical-free food production system. Moreover, the initiative pioneered an alternative approach to the local economy, which relies heavily on tourism in Nusa Penida” Rut added.

SGP Indonesia National Coordinator Catharina Dwihastarini added that building the farm’s infrastructure relies on a saving scheme that sets aside funds for further investments, as illustrated by a recent plan to build a biogas unit. “Communities that take action together can do a lot of things and can create change on a global level. Hopefully we can continue to expand this work with the knowledge gained from traditional practices,” she said, stressing the importance of relying on bottom-up participatory approaches.

SGP In Indonesia

Since 1992, SGP has been providing financial and technical support to civil society and community-driven initiatives that address global environmental issues while improving local livelihoods in Indonesia. Over the past three decades, SGP Indonesia has supported 502 projects and worked with 200 civil society organizations and local community groups.

The SGP’s Sixth Operational Phase in Indonesia (2017-2022) applied the community-based landscape approach to enhance and maintain socio-ecological resilience of priority landscapes and seascapes in Indonesia. This work builds on the GEF’s focal area strategies as well as the UNDP’s Local Action service offer that supports local actors on three essential solution pathways: empowerment, resilience and investment. To date 95 community-based projects have been completed under this phase, 130,698 hectares of land are under sustainable production and 71,827 hectares of coastal seascapes are being managed as community conservation areas.

Local action = global impact

This year marks the 30th anniversary of SGP, a corporate program of the Global Environment Facility, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme since 1992. Currently active in 128 countries, SGP has supported over 27,000 projects led by local civil society and community-based organizations, including women, Indigenous Peoples, youth, and persons with disabilities, to design and lead actions that address global environmental issues.

NDOBALINEWS – Talking about a circular economy is closely related to 3 pillars, namely people, planet, profit.

A circular economy is based on the idea of placing value on all the resources involved in making a product and keeping those resources in circulation indefinitely.

This was explained in a Webinar held by Terasmitra with the theme “Circular Economy from the Eyes of Industry,” on Saturday, October 23 2021.

Suzy Hutomo (Executive Chairperson of The Body Shop Indonesia), one of the speakers in this webinar, said that people, planet, profit are 3 important pillars in a circular economy.

“By helping the earth through sustainable business, the environment will be cleaner and people will be healthier,” said Suzy.

He further said that this could start from yourself, adapting to what is available and affordable. And done consciously, confidently and happily, small things that are done consistently will become good habits.

Implementing a circular economy can be one solution to support sustainable industry as well as sustainable living.

“The first is awareness, don’t stop, and always try to find out more. “Today must be better than yesterday, and tomorrow must be better than today,” added Suzy again in a webinar hosted by Rahmi Fajar Harini from Amiga Bali and Rifqi Afdillah from Terasmitra.

Meanwhile, in another source, Rendy Aditya Wachid, Founder of Parongpong, said that he had implemented a circular economy with the aim of becoming the initiator of the Parongpong Zero Waste High Performance Habitat.

He said that the pandemic had opened the eyes of many people that waste could become a product. What Parongpong has done in processing waste includes collecting cigarette butts which are made into products such as pots and furniture, as well as ashtrays as a criticism of the habit of throwing cigarette butts carelessly.

Meanwhile, Paola Cannucciari from Eco Bali, which was founded in 2006 as a waste management service, said that with responsible waste management, all waste materials can be made into compost, then sorted for recycling. Eco Bali collaborates with waste banks in several villages in waste management.

“Circular economics should be implemented as a solution for managing waste materials. A person who buys goods should be responsible for waste material from the goods purchased. “Not only responsible to yourself, but also to other people and the natural environment,” explained Paola. ***

“Kami sangat senang...

For decades, residents in drought-stricken village of Batuinan in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province had to endure a long walk under the scorching sun to fetch clean water from the springs. Now, under the watchful eye of a much-respected grandmother figure, villagers can easily access water from nearby tanks, powered by the sun.

The ease of water access has been made possible following the completion of a solar-powered water pump system by UNDP Indonesia, with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-Small Grants Programme. Working with local communities’ group, Cemara Foundation, the water pump system is built with 3,300 liter water tanks.

“We are so happy with the water tanks. Now water is in our arm-reach,” said the 75-year-old Grandma, Hectoreda Ukat, who played an instrumental role in the completion of the tanks, one of which is built in her backyard.

But ensuring equal provision of water to the communities in Batuinan village is no easy feat. It requires a trusted and authoritative figure who has earned respect from the local community. Lying at the heart of the remote island of Semau, the village is not well-served with good roads and transportation system, forcing the communities to be self-reliant with sources of living.

Every morning Ms. Ukat, affectionally known as Granny Eda, oversees the water distribution to 19 families in her village. Each family is given a quota of three jerrycans that they can fill between 7 a.m – 9 a.m. The ratio system ensures a fair distribution of water, making sure that no families left behind.

“Sometimes they want to take more than three jerrycans, which makes me sad,” Granny Eda said, noting that larger families often need more than, three jerrycans a day and often ask for additional capacity

To maintain and improve the water supply, Cemara Foundation, along several other local communities’ groups such as Geng Motor Imut (GMI) and, CIS Timor have also joined forces to facilitate the replanting of the nearest water catchment area.

While limited infrastructure remains a key challenges, communities are also faced by other constraints such as threats to environmental sustainability and the potential of social conflict due to the scarcity of resources. Semau Island is home to several largely patriarchal communities where men have automatic succession rights. The appointment of Granny Eda as the Doha Bating Ui or any woman for that matter was unheard of, but communities were united to trust Granny Eda due to her esteemed reputation and leadership qualities.

“I feel honored with this appointment, but what’s most important is to remain fair to all families. Everybody in this village deserves clean water, whether for bathing, cooking,” said Granny Eda.

To instill a sense of communal responsibility residents are required to contribute around IDR 5,000 to IDR 10,000 (USD 0.35 to USD 0.70) per month which goes towards maintenance costs.

Reliable access to clean water and sanitation remains an issue in Indonesia, home to the world’s fourth most populous nation. According to UNICEF Indonesia, open defecation and untreated wastewater contaminate water supply and facilitate the spread of diarrhoeal diseases such as cholera. A quarter of all children under 5 in

Indonesia suffer from diarrhoea, which is the leading cause of child mortality in the country.

With a strong woman at the helm, the communities in Batuinan have shown the world that the wisdom of the elderly could mark a new beginning to gain access of water for all.

GEF SGP Indonesia has been implemented since 1992, supporting 502 projects with total disbursement of funds approaching 9 million US dollars. The aim of this program is to conserve biodiversity, reduce the impact of climate change, stop land degradation and reduce pollution of international waters.
The program has developed in line with the dynamics of community-based resource management and environmental protection efforts. Since the early stages of program implementation, GEF SGP Indonesia has placed a high priority on building direct partnerships with community-based organizations and their supporting non-governmental organizations. In the initial stages, grants were provided to various community and NGO projects. In recent years, the SGP Indonesia Country Program has also participated in a number of strategic pilot initiatives, providing opportunities for community groups to work together on regional and landscape initiatives.
The GEF SGP Indonesia program has reached Phase VI which is working in four work areas, namely Gorontalo, Wakatobi, Nusa Penida and Semau Island. This Phase VI program has been running since 2017 and will end at the end of 2020. During the four years that the program has been running there have been many interesting field practices, both in terms of achievements and as material for reflection and learning. Achievements are of course important to see the extent of the program's success (and failure) in meeting the objective indicators set at the beginning. Meanwhile, reflection and learning are necessary to reinterpret the work that has been done and become learning material for the community, assistants, policy makers, donor agencies and various other parties in making improvements and continuing the program in the future.
In the GEF-SGP Indonesia perspective, this reflection and learning process is part of the knowledge management cycle. This section has received serious attention from the GEF-SGP Indonesia National Secretariat for more than the last 10 years. Various outputs from the knowledge management of GEF SGP Indonesia Phase VI partners, one of which is 'Photostory'. There are more than 54 photostories that have been issued by partners consisting of a collection of partner activities in the link below.

media-wartanusantara.id-Terasmitra held a discussion with the theme “Zero Waste, Save the Earth.” This discussion presented Wiraswati Yuliani (Indonesian Law), Ali Abdullah (Founder of Warung 1000 Kebun), Pranandya Wijayanti (External Relations Manager EwasteRJ), and Chandra Paramita (Manager PT. TES-AMM) as resource persons. The respondent in this discussion was Agus Supriyanto (Head of the Retail Development Section, Directorate of Waste Management, KLHK). Meanwhile, the moderator in this discussion was Zulfikar (CEO of BaGoes). The discussion took place Saturday, 01/30/2021 from 10.00-12.00 WIB, via zoom meeting.

Indonesia is one of the largest waste producing countries in the world, in fact in 2019, Indonesia produced 190,000 tons of waste every day. We often hear unfortunate news from the sea, sea animals are found dead on the beach with their bodies covered in rubbish. There must be a solution to this waste problem immediately. Garbage has become a serious threat to all life on earth.

Currently, some people have started the Zero Waste movement. Zero Waste is a movement not to produce waste by reducing demand, reusing, recycling, and even making your own compost from waste. This movement actually not only has an effect on the environment, but can also make us save more on expenses. For example, by not buying packaged drinks, it means we don’t produce packaging waste and don’t spend money buying drinks. Instead, always carry a drink bottle wherever we go.

In the discussion, Ali Abdullah explained that we have got the best from nature, if there is waste we should not just throw it away. Currently the 1000 garden stalls are also developing eco enzymes.

“We produce the waste ourselves, don’t hand it over to the government, don’t hand it over to the trash collectors. “Because if small-scale houses can manage themselves, there won’t be that problem.” Said the Founder of Stall 1000 Gardens.

On the other hand, Pranandya Wijayanti from EwasteRJ’s External Relations Manager said that another danger is electronic waste or what is known as e-waste. Electronic waste is included in dangerous and toxic materials.

“The EwasteRJ community is here to carry out a campaign about the dangers of e-waste. We also provide collection points, so friends can collect electronic waste at home. Then it will be recycled by a special electronic waste processing company that is certified by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. “For now we are still focused on Java.” Said the woman who is familiarly called Nandya.

TM Share has now entered its 82nd volume. TM Share is a program created by Terasmitra as a space to share knowledge and experience in managing natural resources in Indonesia. TM Share is held regularly twice a week via the Instagram live platform and zoom meetings. This program started in April 2020, shortly after Covid-19 broke out in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Terasmitra is an association of institutions and independent entrepreneurial communities following the Global Environmental Facilities Small Grant Program (GEF SGP) grant program. Terasmitra was founded on January 11 2011. Terasmitra members are spread across 12 provinces, consisting of 66 partners and 73 assisted communities. Terasmitra’s vision is to become a service platform that provides effective support to grow and develop community social entrepreneurship for the welfare of citizens and sustainable environmental safety.
