In the Bulukumba villages, farmers like Rosmi and Erda faced a tough choice: stick to tradition or give up on their family legacy. They worked tirelessly, climbing palm trees and processing sap, yet their hard work was often devalued. They had no way to create more valuable products and relied on middlemen to sell their goods, keeping their income low and their community’s rich heritage in the shadows.
A local partner, Dana Mitra Tani (DMT), stepped in to help. They brought the farmers together, providing training on business management, product quality, and new ways to process their palm sugar. The women of the community, like Rosmi, began to take a leading role in both production and finance, turning raw sugar into a variety of high-quality products. With this new knowledge and support, they were able to set fair prices, connect with a wider market, and even form their own cooperative.
This collaboration transformed their village. The farmers are no longer just sellers of raw goods; they are business owners who protect their heritage while building a better future. Their palm sugar is a testament to their hard work and resilience, proving that tradition and innovation can create a strong, sustainable community for generations to come.
A cooperative and improving market access, the farmers’ business (120 Farmers in 9 villages community) became more organized and profitable, which also led to environmental conservation efforts like planting over 5,000 trees.
