Local seaweed farmers in Bulukumba, like Erna and Kasman, struggled with low and unpredictable income while their coastline was being destroyed by erosion. They were dependent on selling raw seaweed and had no way to create more valuable products.
A partner organization, SAUKANG, stepped in to help. They trained 30 women to turn seaweed into snacks, giving the community a new source of income. At the same time, the farmers planted over 5,000 mangrove seedlings to restore their coastline and protect their farms.
This effort transformed the community. The new skills and restored environment created a more stable and prosperous future. This story shows how working together can solve both economic and environmental problems, turning challenges into opportunities for everyone.
4 seaweed farming groups consisting of 230 people are located in the Ujung Loe sub-district area accompanied by SGP-GEF and SAUKANG (Sahabat Konservasi Lingkungan) who have been carrying out coastal conservation since 2022. This activity is generational with cultivators who have been doing it for 23 years.
