In February and March 2024, two farmer groups in the Tretep District of Temanggung Regency, Central Java, namely the Taruna Tani Sejahtera Group in Tretep Village and the Makmur Farmer Group in Simpar Village, carried out planting of fruit and forestry plants. This activity was facilitated by KTNA (Kontak Tani Nelayan Andalan) and GEF-SGP Indonesia Phase 7.
Purpose of Planting
The planting aims to:
- Enhance food security and the local economy.
- Preserve the environment.
- Raise awareness among the community about the importance of conserving nature.
Types of plants
The types of plants cultivated include:
- Fruit crops: mango, banana, pineapple, and honey jackfruit.
- Forestry plants: neem, balsa, and mahogany.
Planting Location
The planting is conducted on the land owned by members of the farmer groups in Tretep Village and Simpar Village. Prior to planting, the farmer groups prepared the land by clearing it and digging planting holes.
Planting Process
The planting process begins with the symbolic handover of plant seedlings by representatives of KTNA to representatives of the farmer groups. Subsequently, with assistance from KTNA facilitators, members of the farmer groups plant the seedlings.
Community Response
The communities of Tretep Village and Simpar Village warmly welcome this planting activity. They hope that this initiative will benefit the enhancement of food security, economic prosperity, and environmental conservation in their villages.
Support from KTNA and GEF-SGP Indonesia
KTNA and GEF-SGP Indonesia will continue to support the farmer groups in planting and maintaining the plants. They will also provide guidance and training to the farmer groups on proper plant care techniques. GEF-SGP Indonesia has provided funding for the purchase of plant seedlings and planting equipment.
Conclusion
The fruit and forestry planting by the Taruna Tani Sejahtera Group in Tretep Village and the Makmur Farmer Group in Simpar Village serve as a positive example of activities aimed at enhancing food security, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability. It is hoped that this initiative will inspire other farmer groups in Temanggung and throughout Indonesia.
