The Kupang Batanam community was formed out of a concern to provide healthy, sovereign, and close-to-home food. It was born from a concern about agricultural patterns that pay little attention to inputs for plants, such as excessive factory fertilizers and the use of pesticides that exceed the dose to produce plants that look healthy but are actually harmful to health.
This community campaigns on how to grow crops in urban areas with the help of yard plants. Kupang Batanam Community itself was formed in 2017 from the initiative of young people who care about agriculture. Then, the vision was sharpened by the Pikul association to get a board that manages the activities and campaigns of the community. Kupang Batanam's movement started on a household scale. Each member has the opportunity to learn simple farming practices, from the basics to maintenance and harvesting. There is also training in making organic fertilizers, both liquid and solid. To meet the needs of its members, the community provides seeds that are sold at affordable prices.
In the same spirit, from 2018 until now, the Kupang Batanam Community has been actively assisting women farmer groups in 5 villages on Semau Island under the GEF SGP Phase VI program on farming in the yard with the hope that there will be a positive impact in terms of food sufficiency, health, and economy.
