IMPACT OF ACTIVITIES
Agroforestry demonstration plot (Flower garden/Mandala garden and vegetables in Pusar Saab Temple area).
Figure 18: Mandala Garden and Pumpkin and Okra Garden in February 2020. This garden contains various types of ceremonial plants such as Gemitir, Sandat, Bunga Ratna, Mahkota Dewa, Jerungge, Pacah, Nagasari and several other types of plants used for ceremonial activities by residents and Saab Navel Temple. Residents and temple owners do not need to buy from outside. As well as being a decoration and beautifying the temple, many residents take selfies here.
Figure 19: Pumpkin and Okra Gardens have grown well since they were first planted and maintained by the committee. March 2020, some pumpkins and okra were harvested and used (cooked and made into infused water) during the Odalan (temple birthday) event. Others are used as seeds for continued planting by the temple committee.
IMPACT OF ACTIVITIES
Planting more than 13,000 seeds of various types of fruit and wood plants.
Figures 20, 21, 22, and 23
Mass planting was carried out simultaneously with the Village Apparatus, the Police Chief, the Military District Commander, along with residents and the Temple Committee in 2 areas, namely Pura Pusar Saab and Pura Puncak Mundi. Approximately 13,000 seedlings of various productive fruit and hardwood trees were distributed in 2 villages, and around 90% of them had been planted by March 2020.
The planting was carried out around the Temple Area and bordering with residents' land with the hope that it could become a Buffering Zone (feeding ground for monkeys), utilized by residents, and serve as a water infiltration facility to preserve the environment in Nusa Penida.
IMPACT OF ACTIVITIES
The collection of seeds, throwing, and also using the Seed Bomb method involved dispersing over 50,000 seeds of various plant species in the Puser Saab Temple area and the Puncak Mundi Temple area.
Figures 24, 25, 26, 27 & 28: Since the end of October 2019, we have started collecting seeds of various types of plants, ranging from nuts, legumes, fruit and various types of green trees. The total number of seeds collected was estimated at more than 50,000 and were thrown directly and using the seed bomb technique in the PuraPuser Saab and Puncak Mundi Temple areas.
IMPACT OF ACTIVITIES
Seedling house, selling vegetables and pumpkin harvest.
Figure 29: Establishment of a nursery house with table blocks, which can be used by residents and the temple to sow various types of plants and vegetables before being transferred to land or polybags and as a center for seeding various types of plants for program sustainability.
Figure 30: During the vegetable harvest, the Pura can sell the vegetables and the funds collected are used as Punia for the Pura. In the picture above, there are several women buying vegetables grown at the temple.
Figure 31: The temple committee harvests pumpkins which are then used for the Odalan event. As one of the menus for eating together.
IMPACT OF ACTIVITIES
Harvesting Okra, Infusing Water and Land Arrangement for the Batumadeg Village Office and Seed Distribution.
Figure 32 & 33: The Head of Batu Madeg Village appreciates the activities carried out at Saab Temple and wants the Village office to be organized. In the future, the village will adopt what is done at Pusar Saab Temple into a village program.
By using used bottles, we planted toga plants and had the opportunity to distribute seeds which could then be distributed to residents.
Figure 34 & 35: Okra harvest results at Puser Saab Temple, then processed into infused water and given the name Toya Seger. During Odalan (the temple's birthday) we prepared a stand to introduce okra which can be a typical temple product, distributed fairy tale books and also distributed seeds to residents.
BEST EXPERIENCE
Overnight at the temple.
During our activities from October 2019 to March 2020, we were allowed to spend the night at the temple, as well as at the Traditional Hall. The atmosphere is quiet, still and occasionally there is the sound of gamelan in the middle of the night to accompany you. Our main goal is to be 'headquartered' at the temple and traditional hall to make it easier to carry out activities and mingle with residents in the afternoon and evening. Residents like to come to the temple to chat and also every Wednesday they can watch and participate in gamelan practice which is entertainment.
In January 2020, we were asked to move near the public kitchen because a temple committee member was having nightmares.
BEST EXPERIENCE
Hanging out and mingling with the residents.
Every month we always do activities together with the residents, having lunch together, drinking coffee, drinking tea, climbing coconuts, enjoying it with lots of people, then relaxing after the activities becomes a routine during the activities.
We were also invited by Mr Jero Darya Susila to take part in his grandson's 3 month ceremony, there we saw the excitement of the residents working together to prepare various kinds of menus and ceremonial equipment. There was grilling pork, cooking rice, processing food and preparing ceremonial needs, it all came together, we had fun joining in and helping finish the food. ha ha
We were also invited to have dinner at his house another time and ate Kletot for the first time, grilled corn at the first harvest, and got various interesting stories about Nusa Penida.
BEST EXPERIENCE
Preparing and Following Odalan.
We were invited by the Pura Puser Saab committee to take part in the Pura Saab Odalan (Birthday) ceremony, D-3 we participated in preparing odalan needs, such as harvesting Okra leaves, tidying up the area, etc. On the day of the event, we opened a stand to provide information to residents about the activities that had been carried out at Saab Temple, distributed seeds to residents, distributed fairy tale books for children, introduced "toya seger" infused water.
The Village Head also introduced us to all the residents. The sound of the gamelan, the swaying movements of the dancers, the joyful laughter of the children and the smiles of the residents as well as the ceremonial procession became a valuable experience for us that will never be forgotten.
PROJECT SUSTAINABILITY
During our year of activities, we also observed, recorded and documented sources that could be developed in the future related to program sustainability:
- Arrangement of a jogging track or other instruments to support ecotourism / religious tourism in the Puser Saab Temple area.
- Development of processing of agricultural products such as cashews, komak nuts, sorghum, mangoes as regional characteristics.
- Expansion/duplication of demonstration plots for vegetable crops among residents or use of unproductive land.
- Expansion of planting area.
- Integration of agriculture and free-range chicken farming considering that the need for free-range chickens in Nusa Penida is quite high.
