Coral reef rehabilitation application boards and artificial fish houses on the seabed

Thematic priority 1 of 5

Threatened ecosystems and species

SDG 14: Life Below WaterSDG 15: Life on Land

Theme overview

Unregulated fishing, deforestation, and coral reef damage weaken ecosystem functions. Land-use change and overlapping permits threaten ecosystems while marginalizing local communities.

1.1

Mapping Indigenous territories

Main problem

Indigenous Peoples manage more than a quarter of the world's land, and biodiversity in Indigenous territories is equal to or even higher than in formally protected areas. Without recognition of management rights, these areas are easily converted to other uses.

Results we aim for

6,449 haland and ecosystems restored
112,863 halandscapes with improved management practices
8,062 hamarine habitat with improved practices

Outcomes are updated every semester at the OP8 dashboard.

1.2

Coastal and marine conservation

Main problem

More than a quarter of the world's original mangrove cover has been lost, 3–5 times faster than the general rate of forest loss. Yet about 75% of commercial fish species spend part of their lives in mangroves, and each hectare of mangrove stores about 1,000 tons of carbon.

1.3

Species protection

Main problem

Illegal wildlife trade is worth USD 7–23 billion per year, and wildlife populations are declining in many places. This decline erodes residents' livelihoods, deepens poverty, and can trigger conflict.

1.4

Biodiversity-friendly agroforestry

Main problem

Agriculture drives up to 80% of global deforestation and 70% of terrestrial biodiversity loss. Agroforestry maintains tree cover while still producing food and income.

1.5

Community-based blue economy

Main problem

Fish account for 15% of animal protein intake for 4.3 billion people. In Indonesia, the GEF-supported Coremap program in 358 coastal communities shows that alternative livelihoods reduce destructive fishing with bombs and cyanide that damages coral reefs.

1.7

Community fisheries governance

Main problem

More than 35% of the world's assessed fish stocks are now fished unsustainably, up from about 10% in 1974. A fisher in Southeast Sulawesi tells how catches have dropped from about 100 kg to 30–50 kg a day.
